10 Spring Cleaning Tips for Your Ithaca, NY Apartment

Although it may not seem like it, spring is right around the corner.  That means it’s time to clean out your apartment in Ithaca, New York, and prep your space for the warmer months.  As soon as the temperature starts to rise, take that as a cue to open your windows — and your cleaning supplies cabinet.  Not sure where to start? Use this helpful list complete with spots you may have forgotten about and tips on the best way to go about it all.

  1. Cabinets

Over time, lots of grime can build up on your cabinets, especially if you forget to turn on the exhaust hood to prevent grease from accumulating.  Try using a kitchen cleaner specifically designed to target grease like Murphy’s Oil soap.

  2. Windows

Pro tip: do this on a cloudier day, that way the sun won’t dry up the cleaning solution before you’ve had a chance to wipe everything down.

  3. Floors

For your wooden floors, stay away from traditional soap as this could leave stains and damage the exterior.  Just use water, and then apply a wooden floor cleaner afterward.

  4. Bedding

This is something that should honestly be cleaned every two weeks, and your pillowcases even more often.  Try adding in some fabric softener or scented detergent to make everything smell fresh.

  5. Fridge

Especially the interior shelving.  Wash them with warm soapy water, making sure to get every stain out.  Wipe down all of the surfaces that aren’t able to be removed with a soapy sponge before putting the shelves back in place.  For the exterior, make sure you use a stainless steel friendly cleaner.

  6. Carpet & Rugs

Bring out the vacuum (make sure it’s clean and empty first) and have at it, especially in high traffic spots.  For smaller area rugs, shake out all the dirt outside. Spray some fabric refresher to add a fresh scent.

  7. Dishwasher

For this, first, ensure that any spots of leftover food are cleaned and removed.  To sanitize, pour in some specialized dishwasher cleaner and run a cycle.

  8. Stovetop & Oven

You’ll know it’s time to clean your oven if you smell something burning whenever you turn it on.  First, break off any burnt pieces. Then spray some ammonia on whatever is leftover, and sprinkle on baking soda and white vinegar to break up the grease.  Wipe everything away once it starts to bubble up and dissolve.

  9. Washing Machine

The best way to disinfect your washer is to clean the interior with white vinegar and baking soda.  Then, run the machine with hot water and add in any cleaning agents. After that, let everything sit for 30-45 minutes and drain the water out.  Wipe everything down at the end.

  10. Closet

This might be one of the more tedious tasks, but it’s still something we should all do on a pretty regular basis.  Get rid of anything you haven’t worn in the last year or so, and organize whatever you have left.

  11. Walls

At the very least, wipe down your walls with a wet washcloth.  If there are any stains, add in a mild dishwashing liquid and scrub away.
